  • This course provides a comprehensive introduction to Corrosion Engineering, focusing on the technological, economic, and safety aspects associated with corrosion in engineering systems. It explores the electrochemical nature of corrosion, including fundamental concepts of electrochemical thermodynamics, electrode potentials, sign conventions, and the interpretation of potential–pH (Pourbaix) diagrams, along with experimental techniques used to measure electrode behavior.

    The course also examines the electrochemical kinetics of corrosion, including the application of Faraday’s Law, mixed potential theory, and modern experimental methods and instrumentation used in corrosion studies. Students will learn about passivity and the formation of passive films on metals, and how alloy performance can be evaluated through experimental investigations.

    In addition, the course introduces polarization techniques for corrosion rate measurement, such as Tafel extrapolation and polarization resistance methods, as well as the use of commercial corrosion monitoring devices. Finally, it covers major forms of corrosion—including galvanic corrosion, concentration cell corrosion, pitting corrosion, and crevice corrosion—with emphasis on their mechanisms, characterization, evaluation techniques, and practical strategies for prevention and control.
